(TrueNewsBlog) – President Jovenel Moise failed to hold legislative elections last year and the year before, now as his constitutional term of office comes to an end, he is trying to convince the international community to allow him to remain in power until 2022.
During that time, Moise proposes to hold legislative and presidential elections, and a constitutional referendum on a new proposed constitution. But the state of insecurity in Haiti would prevent a fair and fraud free elections.
On Monday, Haiti prime minister signed an agreement to receive $20 million from the United Nations to organize elections and the constitutional referendum.
Mathias Pierre, the delegate of Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe, announced the funding via Twitter on Monday. “First contribution of the “basket fund,” Pierre said.
But experts have cautioned against holding elections because of political unrest and the kidnapping crisis.
Members of the opposition are demanding that Jovenel Moise respects the constitutional term of his presidency and leave on February 7, 2021 when his term expires. A transitional government will take place to organize elections and the referendum on the proposed new constitution. As of now, Moise scheduled legislative elections for April 25 and Presidential election for September 19.
